Gambian president is slowly dropping his numerous and meaningless titles, Babil Mansa [Bridge Building King] becoming the latest casualty. This comes two months after he had abandoned the title of Nasiru Deen [Helper of Islam].
The news, contained in a terse official letter from the Foreign Affairs Ministry, did not explain the reasons for the impromptu about-turn. It only states thus: “The President of the Republic of the Gambia, His Excellency, Sheikh Professor, Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh, has decided to drop the title of Babil Mansa.”
President Jammeh had earlier ditched the title of Nasiru Deen [Helper of Islamic religion] without offering explanation to the public. His office only issued a terse press release informing the public that Gambian leader parted away with the said title.
Critics of Gambian leader have always thrown punches at him for being obsessed with unearned titles. President Jammeh has proven to be a carbon copy of the late Ugandan President Idi Amin Daada who was known for honouring himself with countless number of titles.
It is not clear which title will be next in line for dropping.
