Police Told Journalist To Stop Reporting

Sanna Camara, a senior Journalist with the Standard Newspaper in Bakau, who was reporting on bail at the police headquarters in Banjul since June 30, has now been asked to stop reporting until they need him again.

Camara, who was arrested on Friday, June 27th 2014, detained overnight at the Bundung Police Station and released the following day, was held in police custody relating to the publication of an article he authored. The story titled ‘Police admit problems with human trafficking’, referenced an interview he purportedly had with the Police spokesman, ASP David Kujabi.

Sanna’s article followed a US Human trafficking report, in which The Gambia was ranked very low on prevalence of trafficking in persons. “The police have now asked me to go home and stop reporting on bail, but that they will call me if they need me again,” the journalist said.

However, since his arrest, release and subsequent reporting at the police no legal charge has been preferred against him for the publication of the said article.
