Senegalese President Macky Sall is visiting Gambian capital Banjul to participate in the high level meeting scheduled between March 11 through 13. The two neighbouring West African countries share almost everything in common, including social and cultural heritage.
The visit takes place barely a week after the Gambia government apologised to Senegal over the comments of Tourism and Culture Minister Hamat Bah.
“The three day meeting will begin with that of the Experts to be followed by the Inter-Ministerial one and concluded by the meeting with the two Heads of State, President Adama Barrow and President Macky Sall,” a release from President Barrow’s office stated. “The two Heads of State will have a joint press conference
during the visit.”
Neighbouring Senegal was a key player in tabling UN Resolution 2337, recognizing Adama Barrow as President, and giving green light to ECOWAS forces to cross the Gambian border if ex-dictator Yahya Jammeh failed to comply with the regional bloc’s ultimatum to relinquish power by midnight on January 19th, 2017. This culminated in resurgence of the Senegambian dream as evidenced by the unprecedented level od bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Top on the agenda include issues relating to Defence and Security, Forestry, Transport, Justice, Tourism and Culture, Communication, Energy and Petroleum, Custom, Trade, Sports. The two countries’ foreign ministry officials are expected to address consuls matters.
The three-day meeting will also provide an opportunity for both countries to strengthen bilateral ties as President Adama Barrow and his Senegalese counterpart are set to endorse a joint communique on several areas of cooperation.
