Gambian President Adama Barrow is confident that the newly launched OMVG Hydroelectric Substation will increase the current 40 percent electricity supply in the country by 60%. The country’s generationย capacity is also expected to increase from 102 to 250 Mega Watts.
President Barrow’s revelation were made in Jarra Soma where he addressed thousands of Gambians at the launch of the OMVG hydroelectric energy project at the weekend.
President Barrow said the environmentally-friendly project is a significant shift in the governmentโs energy production drive toward the use of renewable energy. Gambian leader talked about urgent measures being taken by his government to speedily close the huge gap between demand and supply. He cited the maintenance and rehabilitation of existing engines and the procurement of new machines to expand The Gambia’s energy capacity.
The OMVG High Commissioner in The Gambia, Lansana Fofana, said the interconnection project includes a 1677KM long line with a transmission capacity of 80MW. The regional project that is expected to be completed in 18 months will cost $722 millions.
