2 Gambians Succumb to London Fire

A Gambian mother and her daughter were among the 17 people who succumbed to for that engulfed west London block of flats. Mary Mendy (54) and Khadija Saye (24) were last heard from shortly after the fire broke out.

The duo lived on the 20th floor of Grenfell Tower flat.

Khadija’s friend first brought her case to the public, soliciting information about her whereabouts. Nicola Green, who is the wife of Tottenham MP David Lammy recalled her telephone conversation with Khadija. ‘She was saying, “Please pray for me. There’s a fire. I can’t leave the flat. Please pray for me and my mum.’”

‘At one point she’d tried to leave again and it was impossible. She said she felt like she was going to faint.’

British Prime Minister who had earlier visited the the scene wanted to get to the bottom of how the fire had rapidly escalated. Theresa May said people “deserve answers” because the emergency services “told me that the way this fire had spread and took hold of the building was rapid, it was ferocious, it was unexpected.”

“So it is right that, in addition to the immediate fire report that will be produced and any potential police investigation, that we do have a full public inquiry to get to the bottom of this,” Prime Minister May told the UK media
