An outstanding jornalist has been selected as the candidate of an alliance involving the United Democratic Party, National Reconciliation Party and Gambia Moral Party.
Madi Ceesay won the nomination in “a democratic and transparent process” conducted by the UDP Serekunda West constituency selection committee on Sunday March 5th. The proprietor and manager of the Daily News, is vying for the Serekunda West constituency on April 6th National Assembly elections.
Mr. Ceesay has a wealth of knowledge and experience in journalism. Apart from trading career with Swaebou Conateh at the Gambia News & Report, Madi served as the manager of The Independent. Ceesay was arbitrarily arrested, detained and tortured in the aftermath of the purported March 21st foiled coup.
Despite the security threats and arbitrary closure of his newspaper, Ceesay stayed in the country and fight a brutal dictatorship until he had fallen. If elected, the press freedom activist will add value to debates at the national assembly.
Madi’s nomination has been hailed as “the right decision” because New Gambia needs “grassroots candidates who understand the plight of ordinary Gambians.”
