An inmate of Mile II Central Prisons last week died in mysterious circumstances.
Mamadi Manneh died on February 4, 2014 after he had gone through severe torture in the hands of prison officers.
Our Mile II sources confirmed that Mamadi’s death followed two days of severe tortures.
Manneh, a native of Basse in Upper River Region, was transferred from Jan Jan Bureh Prison in Central River Region. The qualified teacher had also worked at the then Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul.
Kairo News has since been putting its sources to work in a bid to ascertaining the reasons for incarcerating Mamadi Manneh.
Hundreds of people – Gambians and non-Gambians – have been languishing in the country’s prisons and detention centers. Most of the detainees have neither been charged nor appeared before a court of law as stipulated in the Gambian constitution.
