Tracing his ancestry through six generations – slave and freedmen, farmers and blacksmiths, lawyers and architects – back to Africa, he discovered a sixteen year-old youth, Kunta Kinteh. It was this young man, who had been torn from his homeland and in torment and anguish brought to the slave markets of New World, who held the key to Hailey’s deep and distant past. Written by Sir Alex Hailey the Author of THE ROOTS.
Kunta Kinte was born in circa 1750 in a mandinka village called Juffere. His father Omoro and his mother Binta Kinte were all born in Juffure. Kunta Kinte was born and raised in Juffure village until he was picked and sold to the slave masters. After crossing the terrible journey of atlantic ocean, Kunta Kinte was brought to America as a slave. The great great grandchildren of Kunta Kinte decided to find out where their ancestors came from. Not only the name of the place, but they want to know what kind of people their ancestors are, how are they living and also learn their culture. That is the main reason of The Roots homecoming festival. The one and only person who is the main reason of all this, is Kunta Kinte of Juffure village.
This is a big insult to people of Juffure village; it is an insult to the entire nation, an insult to the great grandchildren of Kunta Kinte who decided to organise this roots home coming festival after realising that the festival will be held in Kaninlai instead of Juffure. Kunta Kinte and his ancestor, none of them have even heard the name of this tiny village called Kaninlai.
Are you not ashamed of stealing the culture of Juffure village Mr. President? Are you proud of celebrating something you stole from Juffure? Are you not ashamed of welcoming the guests in Kaninlai to celebrate a stolen festival? Mr. President you are no more than a criminal and a cultural thief!!! This roots homecoming festival does not belong to you and Kaninlai. So give it back to where it belongs to, and that is Juffure.
