President of Tanzania, John Magufuli wants prisoners in his country to live in harsher conditions.

He wants inmates to work “day and night” and be prevented from benefiting from conjugal visits.

The Tanzanian President on Saturday also called for all lazy prisoners to be “kicked”.

“It is a shame for the country to continue to feed prisoners. All the prisons have fields, inmates must cultivate them,” Magufuli said.

He also said “Some prison staff don’t have homes. Make the prisoners work, let them make bricks day and night. If they show laziness, kick them. You have labourers, and for free”

Magufuli was speaking at the inauguration of new prisons chief Faustine Martin Kasike.

The Tanzania President is known for his strict style of governance and has come under criticisms recently for that.

Magufuli wonders why prison staff allowed prisoners to receive conjugal visits.

“A man is in prison, leaving his wife outside, and a prison official receives this woman and authorises the prisoner to do things he is not supposed to do during his detention. I don’t want to hear talk of that anymore,” he said.

He also believes under employing prisoners encourages them to resort to drug use and homosexuality.

“I don’t want to hear about this. I want reforms in the management of prisons,” he said.

Unconventional ideas

Magufuli in February also claimed to have the solution to the high level of prostitution among women in his country.

The Tanzanian leader asked men to marry two or more women to reduce the rate of prostitution among Women.

Magufuli told a gathering of men that unmarried women are resorting to adultery due to ‘lack of men to marry.’

“I am not forcing you, but just encouraging you to marry two or more wives to reduce on women staying without husbands”, Magufuli said.
