Who Will Be Gambia’s Next President?

The political parties and the people of the Gambia are poised for election to fill the highest position in the country. What is to happen on 1 December 2016 is unfolding day by day as candidates declare their candidature and as people take their stand.

The 2016 presidential election appears to be one that would be vigorously contested. All shades of opinion, parties and personalities are coming to the foreground. Many people who had taken backstage are now taking the forefront in promoting one candidate or the other. Voices that had never been heard on the political platform are now been heard. Cyber space is now providing for the amplification of the voices of the different political forces contesting to take charge of the destiny of the country. Pluralism of ideas is flourishing.

What is however essential is to bear in mind that it is the right of every Gambian to elect representatives or be elected if they meet the necessary criteria and earn the support of the people. Respect of people’s rights is a virtue that every sovereign citizen should exercise if all Gambians embrace such a democratic virtue.

Debates over policies and political opinions would be characterized by maturity and tolerance to enable the people to make informed choices. This is the way forward for 2016 if we want the people to make the right choice.

The above culled Foroyaa Newspaper piece has summed up the very essence of democracy, which is all about flourishing of ideas. Until we argue we can never get to the center. We do well when we politic without throwing venom at one another. Words hurt badly and that spoken words cannot be retracted. We may have different routes or strategies to employ but our ultimate goal is to get to the Promised Land. We should not therefore turn the journey into exchange of fists.

  1. Well said; forward Gambia & ever true…

The sooner the politicians come to agreement, close ranks & start campaign to sensitize the country for the collective flag-bearer the greater our chance for quicker liberation…

It might be bit late for now but in hindsight there’s should’ve been a (donor) fund which should’ve taken care of the unregistered youth & any qualified citizens on the ground who aren’t up to date with voting card registration had there been collective consensus on flag bearer earlier…

Those who may doubt, Dr Isatou Touray, one of our options for our neutral candidate if not for any of the opposition party leaders is indeed known to every woman in every corner in the Gambia including within the DEVILISH aprc…

It doesn’t matter whosoever is selected; all the opposition parties will have to campaign to sell the image of the person politically & explain the real reason which is LIBERATION FIRST to the population; & the urgent need for all Gambians with MORAL conscience to act in unison for a peaceful change of the MURDEROUS status quo currently destroying our country…

Together, we’ll get there soonest; Insha Allah…

    Long live the Gambia

  2. As always, ideas emanating from PDOIS and transmitted through the pages of Foroyaa, strengthens beyond any doubt, the democratic credentials of that party and the open society it envisages for our country.

Without doubt, PDOIS is a party that is capable of creating and nourishing a pluralist society, where ideas will be allowed to flourish, because they have demonstrated their readiness to engage in debates whilst in opposition.

  3. In love with Gambia

We(The Gambian people ) have to do everything to safe our country from the dangers of Yahya Jammeh and his wicked and selfish helpers. Take this from me, Yahya Jammeh may even go far enough to fake an attempt on his life and then round up some officers then announce a state of emergency in the country to stop the election process. Let us watch and see. This PIG can do everything in this world to stay in power.

  4. Who wins Jimara area or whole URR can be next president of The Gambia but you must respect they religion as a Muslim nation

    • This is clear evidence you don’t have a heck of an idea what erudite Islamic Scholars say, opine or teach to Muslims in forums here. Muslims better learn to live in grace in their families first before suggesting it for the nation. Your wishes won’t go anywhere.
May god watch over the lifes and healths of Hon. Femi Peters, Hon. Ousainou Darboe and the rest of the Udp executives of Hon. Ladies and gentlemen.
