In Golden Lead Saga, Defence Files ‘No Case To Answer’ Motion

By Abdoulie John

The defence counsel for environment activist Dr. Amadou Scattered Janneh has applied for no case to answer, urging the Brikama Magistrate’s Court to acquit and discharge his client.

Defence Lawyer Lamin J. Darboe made the application on Wednesday after the prosecution failed to provide witnesses to testify in the case.

Dr. Janneh is facing two counts of criminal trespass and punishment for malicious injury. This followed a demonstration he spearheaded in April this year leading to the removal of discharging pipes belonging to a Chinese fish meal Golden Lead in Gunjur. Activists accused the Chinese company of discharging toxic waste into the sea, causing environmental hazards.

The prosecution closed its case against Dr. Janneh. Principal Magistrate Omar Cham is expected to hand down a ruling on the submission made by the defence.

Expectations are high that the next hearing will determine the fate of the accused person…

Hearing will resume on December 27, 2018.
