The Media Council of the Gambia invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of EXECUTIVE SECRETARY.
What we are looking for:
A degree or extensive experience, preferably in media, journalism, law or management
Must be computer literate. Skills in Word, Excel and PowerPoint are a must
Must have fair knowledge and skills in project management
Excellent communication skills, including a command of English and at least two major local languages
Knowledge of the role, importance and functions of the media as well as media law and ethics
Knowledge of issues of freedom of expression, freedom of information and media freedoms
Knowledge of conflict management/resolution or alternative dispute resolution systems
Ability to fundraise and advocate
Strong leadership and negotiation skills
Skills in financial management is highly appreciated
Duties
The EXECUTIVE SECRETARY is in charge of:
running of the administrative affairs of the Media Council
handling ethics complaints
initiating the policy and strategic direction of the Media Council
advising the Governing Council on matters relating to professional and ethical standards in journalism
raising funds for running of the Media Council and implementation of programmes
monitoring compliance of professional and ethical standards by the media
ensuring adherence to professional and ethical standards by media
speaking for and on behalf of the Media Council on matters relating to the integrity of the Media Council or issues of professional and ethical standards in journalism
sitting in Ethics Panel hearings and Governing Council hearings and meetings as Secretary
engaging media stakeholders, including the government, civil society, members of the public, media professionals, media organisations, media training institutions, among others, on matters relating to professional and ethical standards in journalism
About MCG
The Media Council of The Gambia (MCG) is an industry-wide self-regulatory mechanism established to promote professional and ethical standards in the Gambian media industry.
Launched on December 23, 2018, the MCG monitors compliance of rules of ethics and handles complaints with respect to violation of ethical and professional standards by news and information media.
The organs of the MCG include Secretariat, which is headed by the Executive Secretary; Ethics Panel, which hears complaints of violation of professional and ethical standards; and the Governing Council, which exercises oversight over the secretariat and also serves as Appeals Panel.
