UDP Records Electoral Milestone

The United Democratic Party of Lawyer Ousainaou Darboe has once again recorded yet another political milestone in last night’s local government elections. The party has not only maintained its winning spree but it won big by conquering 7 of the 8 local government council leadership seats. Except Kuntaur Area where the UDP chairmanship candidate Morro  Ousainou Jobarteh narrowly lost to the Gambia Democratic Congress candidate Saihou Jawara, the party of yellow won everywhere, including in Banjul, Kanifing Municipality and Brikama Area Council. The party last month bagged more than half of the area council wards, a performance some analysts thought was below expectations. Whatever political strategy or formula the UDP adopted proved to bring positive results. The party leader’s nationwide political tour ahead of the May 12 vote must not be underestimated. The UDP has miraculously outperformed GDC in many of the latter’s strongholds. The GDC officials must go back to the table and figure out reasons for the party’s low performance. The party might have inflicted self wounds for successfully disqualifying the APRC chairmanship candidate Pa Musa Suso from the race in Basse. The GDC’s petition query is legitimate but it has invited anger within the APRC whose members threatened to teach the party of Mamma Kandeh unforgettable lesson. APRC supporters were advised to either stay at home or vote for the UDP whose leader they respect for not “bent on sending the APRC to the grave.” APRC supporters would not forgive GDC for “plotting to tear the APRC apart through nefarious means.” The APRC did well in both Brikama and Kanifing but fell short of winning a since local government area leadership.
