UDP Leader, Others In Security Custody

The leader of the opposition United Democratic Party, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, was this morning arrested alongside his newly elected executive by Gambian police. Mr. Darboe and his executive were arrested and detained for holding a peaceful demonstration, demanding the release of their detained colleagues.

As we write this report, armed security forces are arresting and beating peaceful protesters. Those arrested have been seen bundled in police vans. The whereabouts of the arrested protesters, including Ousainou Darboe and colleagues, remain unknown.

News continues to tick in, with security beefing up in and around Mr. Darboe’s Pipeline residence where the peaceful protest began.

More news will come.
