The Gambia’s former minister has been elected President of the Gambia Football Federation.
Lamin Kaba Bajo’s election resulted after he had scored 28 votes as compared to Buba Mbye Bojang’s 23 votes. He replaced Mustapha Kebbeh whose administration was forced out of office after the Gambia got punished for fielding in overage players.
Mr. Bajo was born in Brikama on November 10th, 1964. The former commissioner and cabinet member during and after the military rule worked in the diplomatic service in many countries becoming Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Qatar, Iran, Oman and Kingdoms of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Jordan. Mr. Bajo currently woks at President Yahya Jammeh’s Kanilai Group International.
Also elected into by the GFF congress were Abdoulie Jallow, Ebou Faye and Martin Gomez as 1st, 2nd and 3rd Vice Presidents, respectively. Also co-opted into the football executive were presidents of seven regional football associations, Alhagie Faye, Adama Lowe, Mam Lisa Camara and Sainabou Cham.
Analysts said the election of Lamin Kaba Bajo will result in politisation of football in a country where the President wants to have control over everything. His election came on the heels of complaints and lawsuit by former GFF presidents who were banned from contesting in Saturday’s congress.
