Thirteen of the 25 April 14th remanded protesters were unconditionally bailed by the police, Kairo News confirmed. Eleven others who were moved to Mansakonko for trial still remain remanded at Mile II Central Prisons.
The bailed men are: Baboucar Gitteh, Baba Ceesay, Ebrima Janko Ceesay, Lamin Camara, Alhagie Jammeh, Alhagie Jatta, Ebrima Jadama, Pa Ousman Njie, Kekuta Yabou, Baboucar Jah, Muhamed Jawneh, Baboucar Touray and Sadar Secka.
According to confirmed sources, the men were picked up from Mile II on the pretext that they would be transported to Mansakonko for trial only to be driven to the Police Headquarters in Banjul. Upon arrival, they were told to call their relatives to come and bail them. With only an identity card, the men were let go.
Kairo News has learnt that Lawyer Ousainou Darboe followed security officers who came to pick up the youths. He was reported to have said: “where are you taking my youths? You will be held responsible if anything happens to them.”
The government has not publicly stated any reason for granting unconditional bail to the 13 youths. One source said the government’s strategy is to put the remaining remanded April 14th detainees in the dark. “They don’t seem to know how to handle this politically motivated cases,” one source said.
