President Yahya Jammeh’s dialogue with the people’s tour has proven to be a moment that instills fear and apprehension among district chiefs, alkalolu and senior government officials who have become victims of either arrest, detention or sacking. Some have been charged with giving false information to a public officer or at worse charged with economic crimes and abuse of office.
The district chief of Nianija, David Cham, has become the casualty of President Jammeh’s 2014 tour. Kairo News gathered that Chief Cham was sacked from office after he had got into President Jammeh’s skin. Nianija chief refused to follow the footsteps of other chiefs by welcoming President Jammeh with a huge delegation. The anger-laden president ordered the police at Kaur to arrest David Cham.
Kaur police confirmed the arrest of Chief Cham. “Yes, Davis Cham was sacked and has been detained here since April 20. We have been acting based on the direct orders of President Jammeh,” Kaur police officer told Kairo News.
The police spokesperson had earlier denied knowledge of the arrest and detention of Nianija chief. Superintendent David Kujabi promised to liaise with the Police Commissioner of Kaur to verify the story.
David Cham has been replaced by Alhaji Faraba Jallow, the current Alkalo (head) of Paleleh village. Jallow, who confirmed his appointment, showered praises on the Jammeh government for the trust and confidence they have in him.
Jallow has called on the people of Nianija to unite and respect the laws of the land. “I intend to work hard with my people to end all the political differences and to develop the district,” he told Kairo News.
